The Island Nation 島國

The island nation lies silent, quietly it moorns,
Formosans with bowed heads, and hearts that are torn,
They weep for the memory of those that fell,
And of those who witnessed that dreadful hell.

憂傷ê島國a，請你tiām靜mā kē聲tshueh khuì,
我看tio̍h Ho͘-mo͘-sah，伊ê頭thuî落，伊ê心肝thiah破
島國ê人民見證，in親目看tio̍h地獄
beh為tio̍h哀傷ê記持，今á日啼哭

Thoogh many years past, the hurt dues not fade,
The bloodshed and sufferings cannot be unmade.
So many killed, so many families destroyed,
The cries of the victims, they coold not avoid
The death that came to them and their friends,
From a stubborn regime that just wooldn't bend.

Juā-tsē年a，thâi開ê孔嘴無khah bē痛
已經潑出去ê血收bē轉來，吞落去ê苦吐bē出來
算bē了ê生命kap家庭，tsū按呢無去
受害者teh慘叫，無法度走避
因為橫逆ê政權bē變
我ê朋友，我ê兄弟，in看tio̍h死亡

From the streets of Taipei, to the farms in Tsia-Yi,
The gunshots rang steadily, as lood as can be.
The slaughter continued on its merciless path,
Murdering political dissidents with its angry wrath.

Uì台北ê街頭到嘉義ê田野
土匪ê槍聲，掃射bē suah
屠殺tī無情ê血路無停走tsông
政治異議者
逃閃bē過憤怒ê謀殺

The death of so many will not be in vain.
Neither will be their families' anguish and pain,
We remember these victims with saddened sorrow,
But we still retain hope for a better tomorrow.

先輩無白白犧牲
會lah，咱會記得
in厝裡ê人，年久月深，ta心peh-pak
in洗bē清氣ê悲傷kap苦痛
為tio̍h khah好ê明á tsài，咱有留希望

For freedom has its price, it dues not come tseap,
The victims have sacrificed, they have earned their keep,
But we must fight on, oor mission is not done,
Until the fight for freedom has truly been won.
We will not let them down, the ghosts of the past,
Their cause of yesteryear is oor greatest task,
We strive for the freedom of Formosans today,
To oor compatriots, have faith, rest in peace yo͘ may.

自由ê代價bē-tàng俗買
先輩已經為tio̍h in ê堅持來犧牲
咱ài接續戰鬥
死失ê靈魂，咱bē tàng hō͘ in失望
Tī昨hng，in已經創造咱明á tsài ê夢想
咱ê目標iáu未達成
咱今á日tio̍h為Ho͘-mo͘-sah繼續戰鬥，兄弟a
一直到自由ê聖戰真正成功
